Some reasons I admire Stephen King: He’s more generous with secondary characters than most writers. He knows horror is just a way to draw out character depth. He’s never forgotten what it’s like to be poor, or to be a kid. The more I reread him, the more new things I see.

Another reason I admire Stephen King: He’ll kill off any character at any time for any reason, no matter how much he or we love them. The reader has no permission to get comfortable, and once they’re conditioned to that, they find … comfort. It’s an act of cheerful defiance.
