Today we proudly presented some of our #icelandicwinterwhale work at the #Oikos2020 conference in Reykjavik, Iceland and will continue tomorrow. Humpback whale winter occurrence, isotope niches in Iceland and sociality are the highlights from our study this year.

Yesterday one of our MSc student Þóra Bergsveinsdóttir presented her poster on the seasonal isotope niches of humpback whales which see received a prize for as the best student poster at the #Oikos2020 conference. Nice work Þóra

A 14 m adult male humpback washed ashore in S-Iceland last week. The whale was recently dead by the time it stranded. There were no clear external indications of trauma. We got the chance to take measurements and biopsy samples of this giant.

Yesterday a winter humpback whale was freed from entanglement in Eyjafjörður, NE-Iceland where we have conducted our winter whale research. Very pleased with the professional response of locals who saved this whale's life

Another happy news from Icelandic waters. A humpback was successfully saved from entanglement by the Icelandic response team for whales in distress

Covid has truly been keeping us out of the field. But, yesterday things turned our side and we got to do some #humpback fieldwork in #Faxaflói. There, 6 humpbacks and hundreds of birds were feeding actively. Big thanks to the #HSSK S&R unit for taking us out and for the pictures

#IcelandicWinterWhale summer fieldwork in the spectacular #Skjálfandi Bay, NE-Iceland. Our focus is the overwintering strategy of #humpbacks in the #subarctic, to understand the drive for overwintering we also collect behavioural and physiological data from different seasons

We are looking for two computer science students in Iceland to participate in developing a citizen science network for whale research in Iceland. The job involves the development of an app linked to a web page. The deadline to apply is the 25th of June. See the attached ad.

We have been joining Jake Levenson and EldingWhaleReykjavik + WhaleWatchingAkureyri in the field attempting to deploy #CatCam (non invasive archival video tags) on #humpbacks. One beauty carried a tag for approx. 15 hours in #Eyjafjörður. We are excited to see the data collected by that whale

We're about two thirds through our fieldwork effort here in northern Iceland. So far we have one camera tag deployment, drone flights on 8 whales and lots of behavioural and photo ID data. Weather hasn't been on our side the last few days but we're optimistic for the final week!

NEW PAPER led by my Swarthmore College crew in Endangered Species Research today! We measured #Chilean #blue #whales using #drones & found they are different in body & tail length from other SH blue #whale subspecies! Needs a new name & targeted #conservation plan! #drones4good int-res.com/abstracts/esr/…

Sometimes we push the margins a bit but we know when to surrender and head back to shore. But during bad weather days we can search from land. I tracked a group of 3 humpbacks from land today at the mouth of Steingrímsfjörður. Hope to find them again tomorrow

Early winter fieldwork 2020 is all done. It was surely a mixed bag. We were on the water only 11 out of 24 days thanks to the early winter storms hunting us. Still, we ID'ed ~50 #humpbacks, got 19 biopsies, 20 drone flyovers and two #CatsCam deployments. What a team effort👊

Socializing humpback whales are the best! Here is an acoustic example of some friendly social sounds recorded in Iceland by Edda Elísabet Magnús during the winter in 2010. The picture is of a socializing group in Iceland in Nov. '20 taken by @alecburslem soundcloud.app.goo.gl/eFLERpYnQUg2k6…
