#ICECHIP makes its way into eastern Wyoming this afternoon in search of storms that produce accumulating hail. These marginal storms with plentiful small hail are not well understood and can be disruptive to traffic.

#DidYouKnow the @IBHShailstudy team uses a handheld 3D laser scanner to create 3D-printed models of real #hailstones? These replicas help us: 💨 Study #hailstone aerodynamics 🧊 Produce cavity molds for ice impact testing 🛰️ Model radar scattering based on natural hail shapes

I’ll process the images better later but it’s entertaining watching 2.5-3” diameter stones bounce off IBHS Hail Study test shingles. And casual Wellfleet tor in the background.

The work continues even after storms have passed. This morning Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety and Central Michigan U. teams are dumping disdrometer data, 3D scanning #hailstones, and analyzing shingle panels after a successful ICECHIP IOP 19 in #Oklahoma on Tuesday.
