Doing my bit to help the honey bee population in East Horsley, Surrey.... as naturally as possible. A bit of hive making on the side.

Spent the past few days helping a neighbour plant a woodland on her croft: 1500 native trees with a few sycamores for good measure. It'll soon be great habitat for Barra's breeding and migrant birds. Who knows, by the time the oaks mature we may have breeding Iberian Chiffchaffs!

A neat little science thread on how soap attacks the coronavirus itself (attacking its lipid-based outer-layer), beyond just washing it off your greasy hands... 👨🏻‍🔬👍

One of the reasons the BBKA doesn’t represent me are confirmed by recent statements like “Bees are livestock”. Bee farmers have livestock. I’m providing an environment for nature to thrive.

Found a robins nest by accident today. On an old keg under some beekeeping equipment. Guess I won’t be using that equipment for a month or so. #robin #beekeeping #birdwatching

Natural food sources are starting to dwindle. Every year at around this time the unused hives in the shed get looted by the local gang. I tracked this lot back to hive 7. #beekeeping

Acacia baileyana is flowering this time of year. Quite a short lived tree and not easy to find, but on a sunny day in Feb gets lots of attention from the bees. #SunshineAmongstGrey

Massive milestone! First inspection of the year. I spent <50% of my time searching for my hive tool. #pro #beekeeping #WinnerWinnerChickenDinner

Swarm time. And for those afraid of swarms I’m wearing shorts and t-shirt. The bees have other things in their mind than worrying about me #beekeeping
