A good stock take here from Development Intelligence Lab On upside, hopefully the lag in country/sector strategies etc means that there'll be some rigour in these. On downside, the fact that so many implementation areas have "no public information available" shows the transparency decline.

Hot off the press - a high-level review of the first year of Australia's international development policy. Our key takeaway? There's been slow and steady implementation progress, but heaps more to do. Especially if govt wants make development an impactful element of statecraft.

#AP4D Founding Co-Convenors Bridi Rice & Richard Moore & Development Intelligence Lab colleague heather murphy offer some thoughts on how to "maximise the impact of what could be one of [🇦🇺's] most powerful elements of #statecraft" in their year one appraisal of Australia's #development policy.

What's happened in the year since the govt dropped its international development policy? There's been slow, steady progress - not all of it visible or transparent. But if Australia wants to make the most of its development program, it needs to get serious. Read our brief below:

This week we were fortunate to run a workshop with key leaders from Solomon Islands on Dragonfly Thinking and the Risk, Reward and Resilience Framework. We loved how they embraced the RRR AI tool, treating it as an extension of their Tok Stori tradition of sense-making.

This week, we’re bringing you something a little different: a Roundup on state effectiveness. The Lab’s Ruby Saulwick synthesises the key insights and perspectives from experts with whom we’ve collaborated. Read it here 👉 ow.ly/f8o350TIuF0

The Lab is on the hunt for its next Director of Analysis and Advising, as I get ready to hang up the proverbial lab coat and say goodbye to a phenomenal team. If you’re a development leader with an instinct for collaborating on policy-relevant analysis, this is the gig for you.

It's always a joy to jump on the mic with @GordonPeake to talk PNG, statecraft and aid effectiveness, and what body of Melanesian water is closest in size to my ego (answer: smaller than the Coral Sea, but as turbulent as the Buka Passage)

Join the Lab! Perks include a rotating roster of office dogs. Today one farted so bad I had to pause my online presentation so he could be excused from the room and I think that’s beautiful 🫶

NEW ANALYSIS: Geostrategic competition is a defining feature of strategic dynamics in the Indo-Pacific and a key shaper of Australia’s international affairs policy. This competition - between the US, its allies and partners, and China - is particularly active in domains that

How can Australia and its partners bolster regional resilience to ameliorate the more corrosive effects of geostrategic competition? Sharp analysis from #AP4D Founding Co-convenor Bridi Rice and Development Intelligence Lab colleagues heather murphy and Martina Zapf. 👇👇👇

Everytime China makes an advance in the Pacific - a banking license here, a security deal there - policymakers tend to ask "how do we stop this?" For me, an equally critical question is "how could we have prevented this?" Some suggestions in the Lab's new brief👇

Some personal news: I have wrapped up at the Development Intelligence Lab. So I’ll be spending even less time on here, which is probably not a bad thing, considering the state of this place. It’s been fun, but I need to get rid of the part of my brain that opens this app.
