For years, my 'secret sauce' in international collaborations has been walking the dusty shelves at GEUS to pull obscure historical data reports. But now you can too! All GEUS reports are now available open-access online back to 1890! (Yes, 1890!) 🤓

Around 10% of the #Greenland ice sheet area had melt on the 29th May, the 3rd consecutive day with more than 5% of the area melting in 2021, thereby launching the official start of the Greenland melt season (as defined on Polar Portal here: polarportal.dk/en/news/news/s…)

Although around 14% of the #Greenland ice sheet area has been melting (average for time of year), refreezing means loss of ice has been low - so not yet the ablation (ice loss) season, defined as 3 consecutive days with more than 1 Gigatonne of ice loss: polarportal.dk/en/greenland/s…

The ablation season is well established up at #PetermannGlacier with lots of small melt ponds visible from Sentinel Hub #Sentinel2 imagery Still lots of #SeaIce too, though admittedly it also looks melty and fractured.

Massive melting event in Greenland. While not as extreme as in 2019 in terms of gigatons (left image - but still would be enough to cover Florida with two inches of water), the area over which melting takes place (right image) is even a bit larger than two years ago.

Ice cores tell us that melt occurred at Greenland Summit once every 250 years from 1000 to 4000 BP. In the past decade, Summit melted in 2012 and 2019, and the red melt zone is close again just now.

Bundinversion i Ittoqqortoormiit blev ved lufthavnen lidt derfra viftet væk en jævn vestlig vind. Dette sendte i går temperaturen op på hele 23,2 graders varme. Data skal først igennem en kvalitetskontrol.

A possible new temperature record near Ittoqqortoormiit in Eastern #Greenland yesterday - data needs to be quality controlled first,

The summer has in general been rather wet, especially in southern #Greenland, with a new record set at Qaqortoq where 145.5mm of rain fell in one day on the 23rd June. Analysis by DMI meteorologists: dmi.dk/da/nyheder/202…

Here's the evolution of the 500hPa GPH over #Greenland during the recent extreme event ! Blocking centered over Greenland promotes the flow of warm and moist air over the ice, as in 2012 and 2019 ! thanks to Cameron Beccario for the great tool ! LDEO The Earth Institute

The Ilulissat Glacier (Sermeq Kujalleq) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world's fastest-moving glacier. Due to its sheer size and speed, it's one of the most studied glaciers in the world – legend has it that the Ilulissat Glacier calved the iceberg that sank the Titanic.

#ImageOfTheDay In addition to historic rain, #Greenland suffered from a massive ice sheet melt in the last few days The 🧊surface mass loss rate was the highest on record for Mid-August since 1950 ⬇️Meltwater is very visible in this #Sentinel2🛰️🇪🇺image acquired on 21 August

It's been quite a summer in #Greenland this year, some exceptionally high melt days but also lots of rain and snow which have somewhat compensated. And still there are very large areas melting compared to the average for the time of year.
