Eight hours to go in the #GRCon24 #CTF! Players are starting to get into the hard challenges and earn some big points. It's not too late to get started: ctf-2024.gnuradio.org

Congrats to all the top GNU Radio Project CTF teams! While I was hoping to beat my 8th place finish from last year, I really enjoyed competing in person on a small team. "Not the FCC" will be back in '25!

The #GRCon24 #CTF walk-through session begins in 15 minutes (14:00 EDT, 18:00 UTC). Come see how players decoded our mystery signals! gnuradio.gl.rna1.blindsidenetworks.com/rooms/emu-8mq-…

New blog post: Not-LoRa GRCon24 CTF challenge. This year I contributed a challenge track to the GNU Radio Project CTF. The idea of this challenge was to decode some analog voice signals that had been chirp spread using the same chirp parameters as common LoRa configurations.

The voice signals in this challenge included narrowband FM, AM, and SSB. The SSB signal was almost hiding below the noise floor to make things even harder. In the post I explain how to solve the challenge, including a trick to avoid having to do phase alignment when dechirping.

I also go into quite some detail about why frequency glitches are almost inevitable after dechirping, regardless of the procedure. The typical quadrature demodulator is quite sensitive to these frequency glitches, so the narrowband FM signals sound quite bad.
