From youthful, conical, pointiness to mature, blowsy frilliness. The changing appearance of the Persistent Waxcap is fascinating! The combination of a fibrillose stipe with non-blackening conical cap (viscous in youth & wet weather) is diagnostic for Hygrocybe acutoconica #fungi

Mealy Meadowcap (Pseudotricholoma metapodium) - a nice find in some unimproved grassland south of Monmouth. This chunky fungus is not seen very often.

We found this lovely Pale Brittlestem (Psathyrella candolleana) on our group outing on Saturday at Bryn Bach Park. You can see the fragments of the veil remaining on the edge of the cap. #fungi Our next outing is 16th September to The Skirrid. Want to join us?

Also found on our outing on Saturday - this Parrot Waxcap (Gliophorus psittacinus). The dark green colour is a great id feature - sometimes just at the top of the stem but here all the way down and on the cap. These are usually found in unimproved grassland. #fungi

Our outing to The Skirrid included this find - a Stinkhorn 'egg'. When it is cut in half you can see the internal structure that will soon produce the phallic-looking fungus that stinks to attract flies to aid spore distribution.

Another find on our Skirrid outing - a Blushing Bracket which gets its name from the way the pores underneath the bracket fungus turn pink when bruised. A great identification feature. #fungi
