Was honored to join Sean Stires’s Irish Breakdown podcast today to talk about my recent Notre Dame Magazine story, the Elmer Sappy Moffitt league and Foundry Field project. Lots of inside baseball talk here too, literally, thinking about old times w Sean! youtu.be/6BoLDfrNRcE via YouTube

The Foundry Field project, subject of my recent story in Notre Dame Magazine, will have its groundbreaking celebration on May 12. Looks to be a neat event—please take note if you’re a South Bend community member or are around that afternoon!

Come celebrate the groundbreaking of Foundry Field, a quality public-access baseball field in South Bend’s urban core, celebrating the baseball stories of our city’s marginalized communities. Free food, games, and prizes! foundryfield.org @IHCDA Elmer Sappy Moffitt

When a bunch of grown-ups wanted to play baseball again, South Bend's Sappy Moffit League was born. That turned out to be the start of something big for kids in town with limited access to the game. They'll soon have Foundry Field to call home: magazine.nd.edu/stories/extra-…

.Foundry Field will provide a quality public-access baseball field for children and adults in South Bend’s urban core. Come celebrate with us! Friday, May 12, 4-6pm Southeast Park, South Bend foundryfield.org

Denver-based artist, innovator, and educator Thomas "Detour" Evans has begun work on a mural at Foundry Field telling the story of the Studebaker Foundry Giants. See the mural up close at the Foundry Field groundbreaking, Friday, May 12 at 4pm at Southeast Neighborhood Park.

If you haven’t read (or listened to) nicholas mainieri’s piece on Foundry Field …… you really really should. magazine.nd.edu/stories/extra-…

I got to spend my entire day out in the community sharing baseball with colleagues, students & neighbors… To quote nicholas mainieri, “What could be more worthwhile than building a garden with your neighbors in the middle of the place that you share?”

If you’re a South Bend history buff, you may remember the Foundry Giants, a predominantly black baseball team in the 1920's. This new field will help immortalize them, and play host to the next great baseball players. Leo Goldman has the details. wsbt.com/news/local/his…

The opening of Foundry Field in South Bend reminds of this story I did in the summer of 2020 about the history of the Negro Leagues in the area. Had a lot of fun talking to Bob Kendrick for it, and thanks to Matt Thomas for the idea! goshennews.com/sports/south-b…

It was a beautiful celebratory groundbreaking event Friday at #FoundryField in #SouthBendIN, sharing in #play, #story, and #community! Thank you to Institute for Social Concerns, Notre Dame, @bgcsjc, @IHCDA, Sappy Moffitt Field Foundation, @IamDetour303, and to all of our community partners and donors.
