Our first preprint as a lab is out! This one is short and sweet: We thought there had to be a faster/higher throughput way of making transgenic fish, so we set out to test if lipofection works, and it does!

"I will know longer be a pawn in your games!" Said I to the largest chess piece in the world. Loving St. Louis @ Midwest zebrafish conference. #MZFM2024

Ever wonder if your personality could predict how you react to a drug? 🤔Turns out it can! 😯 In our recent paper, we find that (1) bold and shy fish have differences in brain serotonin and (2) the effects of Lexapro (SSRI) differ in bold and shy fish. doi.org/10.1242/jeb.24…

"The tell-tale heart... of successful transgenesis!" - Jake Hudock. Grad student who made the first transgenic fish in the lab! Mad props to Jake for getting this up and running!

Totally agree. We complain about a lack of science funding, yet collectively pay millions in exorbitant APCs or access fees to for-profit journals that add little value. That's money better spent supporting trainees and doing the science itself.

First annual lab Belle Isle potluck and whiffle ball was a success! Complete with a diving catch, play at the plate, and controversial call at 2nd base.

Any suggestions on current disagreements in neuroscience? I'm looking for papers for a grad class, and I'd like students to present papers on the same topic drawing different conclusions. Thinking: Adult neurogenesis in humans and glymphatic system controversy. Any other ideas?

It's about time someone took the fight to for-profit academic publishers! I never understood why reviewer's don't get paid while these companies rake in profit margins of over 35% for providing a service done no better (usually worse) than non-profits. highereddive.com/news/6-major-a…

Great talk today from the first person to put an optogenetic construct in a neuron...none other than Dr. Zhuo-Hua Pan at the Wayne State school of medicine! Hopefully these will make it into therapeutics for vision loss soon.

Super excited to have gotten tenure and remain part of the department! Thank you to all my mentors and graduate students who have made this possible. I'm humbled and extremely grateful 🤗

Ever wonder how to map whole brain activity in adult zebrafish? Wonder no longer! We demonstrate how to use the adult zebrafish brain atlas (azba.wayne.edu) to identify the neural correlates of behavior! Check it out...work led by Neha Rajput! eneuro.org/content/12/3/E…
