Labor should’ve ditched the Stage 3 tax cuts for high income earners ages ago. Would’ve been better to do it earlier and before the election. But recent high inflation and a cost of living crunch has made it defensible to ditch the policy with limited political fallout. #AusPol

There are subtle but significant differences between being middle class and being upper middle class. I find myself often wrestling with living a comfortable middle class life or stretching and striving for an upper middle class lifestyle.

After nearly 12 months living in London I don’t understand how more young people in this city aren’t (economically) right wing. The place is totally broken under the weight of regulation and socialist handouts - economic liberalism is the only solution.

London is not working for young professionals. Wages (outside of tech & finance) are lower than in Australia, but the cost of living—especially rent—is far higher. A nice one-bed apartment in Melbourne is within reach; in London, even mid-career professionals live in sharehouses.

The biggest cost crisis? Rent. 23% of London’s homes are socially rented, distorting the market while professionals pay through the nose for tiny, poor-quality flats—or just accept permanent sharehouse living.

London’s local and national government seem to exist primarily to redistribute money to the economically inactive. Young professionals are taxed heavily to fund pensions & welfare, while also handing over extortionate rents to landlords. Squeezed from all sides.

The UK tax system takes from young professionals to subsidise retirees and the workshy. Meanwhile, landlords profit off sky-high rents. Council tenants sit in prime London locations while those actually working pay for it all.
