I had a fun couple of months at The Everett Herald. Sound Publishing just cut its staff by over half, so my re-entry into sports journalism was brief. Best of luck to everyone. Another sad day for journalism.

Herald ownership lets go half of newroom. Publisher tells his own paper “readers won’t notice” and then — takes the story down?! Egregious, insulting to everyone who lost their job yesterday and everyone left there who now has to work twice as hard. God, I’m so sorry guys.

I wanted to take a little time to gather my thoughts before posting about the devastating layoffs that took place at The Herald yesterday, when more than half of what was left of the newsroom was lost. 1/

It really can’t be said any better than this. Nick is an example of the best that local newsrooms have to offer. Covering sports in Snohomish County with four staffers was a massive challenge, but with only two it’s frankly impossible.

As I wrote a long letter to The Herald's ownership a few weeks ago, I found myself also writing out my feelings about my former career. I loved journalism for so long; I'm pretty sure I would never go back, however. And I hate that. efetters-walp.wixsite.com/efetters-walp/…

Today's a hard day. Twelve of our members are working their final shift. We bargained tirelessly for a month, but Carpenter Media simply refused to spare any jobs. We were, however, able to negotiate optional buyouts, increased severance packages and raises for remaining staff.

And though many of us are departing today, Herald journalists — past, present and future — will continue to fight for a fair contract. We will never stop pursuing what's best for the Daily Herald, its staff and its readers.

Don't have much to add on the Herald layoffs other than this whole process made me deeply sad. Communities need people who care about it to cover its news well & this is a group of people who cared.

The once proud Herald newsroom is now me, a photoj, two grant funded positions (Health, Environment), two sports reporters, two news editors & a sports editor. That’s it. For a county of nearly a million people.
