Say hello to 13 of your newest police officers. These men and women have chosen to serve the Eugene community and we are excited to have them. They head off to the police academy in early January. This is the start of great things to come.

Congratulations to Naoma Parr on 30 years of service as an emergency commutations professional. Working in 911 dispatch is incredibly difficult and the enthusiasm and energy Naoma displays after 30 years is inspiring.

Our newest police officers are working hard in the pre-academy. Thanks to the outstanding defensive tactics instructors who teach these young officers how to stay safe and to effectively protect our citizens.

Attended the Oregon Police Officers Association awards banquet on Friday night. Congratulations to Officer Jesse Smith for receiving a Life Saving award and Officer Travis Palki and Sergeant Matt Lowen for the Medal of Honor.

Incredibly tough day at Cascade Middle School today. Officers are asked to deal with so many dynamic and dangerous situations. Police officer training is so critical. We are so glad that students and staff were kept safe. Excellent investigators are working through the weekend.

There are so many details to investigate when an officer is involved in a shooting. Oregon Law under Senate Bill 111 establishes a deadly force protocol for each county. It’s important that the investigation occurs outside of the involved agency.

Eugene Police Department is working hard to hire the police officers needed to serve our community. Today’s efforts have 16 candidates moving forward to the background investigation. I’m encouraged by the talent and diversity this group offers.

Attended academy graduation today and watched four of our newest officers graduate after 16 weeks of training. Now they will be coming home for another four months of additional training with various field training coaches. Congratulations to our newest academy graduates.

On Monday April 22nd the Eugene Police Department welcomed 17 new police officers. That means that we have as many as 40 police officers in some sort of training. Pre-Academy, State Academy, and Field Training. All positions filled including 3 overhired for upcoming retirements!

Congratulations to 17 Eugene Police Officers sworn in today. 13 recruits will depart for the police academy next month while 4 lateral officers will start field training right away.
