FAQ 10: My cover has just started to let smells through. Can I stop this? #manholecover

A: If you have a manhole within your building, often as a result of building an extension, it may be one carrying foul water. If the seal goes this will result in nasty smells being released.

There are many reasons why the smell may start including the cover not being replaced correctly after lifting, the seal that stops the smell becoming damaged or simple rotted, or sealing grease drying up & becoming ineffective. There may be a few things to try before replacing.

Eg, if the cover has been lifted recently, ensure it's replaced the right way round, any sealing rubber is undamaged & in place (this may be in a special groove in the cover or frame & should be continuous without a break), & bolts or screws are refitted & tightened.

If the cover or frame is damaged it will almost certainly need replacing. If it's not damaged but you suspect the seal has become ineffectual, you can purchase replacement rubber seal, bolts or screws, or renew the grease barrier.

The best rubber seal to use is Neoprene or EPDN & the best grease to use is a Non Setting waterproof grease. Rubber seal, bolts/screws & manhole sealing grease are available from your manhole cover supplier.
