We recently discovered lateral transduction (LT). Now, we unveil the 4th mechanism of transduction: lateral cotransduction. This system involves SaPIs and is more powerful and versatile than phage-mediated LT. Great fun with JChen Lab and Ross Fitzgerald cell.com/cell/fulltext/…

I think we need to talk about how devastating this cancer microbiome refutation paper from Steven Salzberg 💙💛 and colleagues is. It really speaks to how devoid of critical thinking and intellectual depth our glam publishing ecosystem has become. 1/n biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Are you interested in synthetic engineering of phages or the interactions between phages and the immune system in the gut? Check out these two competitive PhD opportunities with me and Mike Brockhurst, Patrick Cai or Kat Coyte at The University of Manchester: bmh.manchester.ac.uk/study/research…

Our op-ed in STAT News makes a case for wastewater surveillance in facilities that can differentiate animal spread of H5N1 from spillover of H5N1 into humans. This approach would complement community-based wastewater surveillance but add a layer of opportunity for early warning.

What if we could universally recombine, insert, delete, or invert any two pieces of DNA? In back-to-back nature papers, we report the discovery of bridge RNAs and 3 atomic structures of the first natural RNA-guided recombinase - a new mechanism for programmable genome design

Check out the latest story from the Sternberg group: phages coopted transposon-encoded nucleases (TnpB) and repurposed them for regulation of host genes! nature.com/articles/s4158… Thrilled to see this work in print, & a huge thanks to my amazing co-authors!!

Modified peptides produced by bacteria protect from phage infection - congrats Helena Shomar and Aude Bernheim for this fantastic discovery! Can these new antiviral molecules also inhibit viruses that infect humans? 🤔

New from the lab: sedentary integrons as biobanks of defense systems (see Eloi Littner 🧵). 10% of the model integron cassettes have anti-phage activity. As there are > 25,000 different families of integron cassettes in RefSeq we’re far from knowing all bacterial immune systems!
