One of my favorite back-to-school activities is a puzzle challenge. I love to see how my students react to difficult situations, work as a team, and verbalize their resulting feelings and ideas about education. We use this to create our class contract.

These discussion techniques get everyone involved and are easily adaptable to all language levels.

In ELD classes, I start with questions to spark ideas. Ss keep a writing notebook where they can translanguage as needed. Then we build vocabulary and use sentence stems and mentor texts to develop their writing in English. #pd4uandme
