👏Very proud of my PhD student, Joanna Lumbsden-Pinto, who successfully defended her dissertation today on "Patterns & Drivers of Vegetation Change in Pine Barren Ecosystems in the Northeastern United States" SUNY ESF SUNY - The State University of New York! Congratulations Dr. Lumbsden-Pinto--well done! 💯‼️

🏆 Congratulations to our new MS student, Danny Wehner, for receiving Lowe-Wilcox Graduate Fellowship at SUNY ESF SUNY - The State University of New York for his field research on the effects of mycorrhiza 🍄 on tree seedling 🌱 establishment across montane-temperate forest ecotones. Well done Danny!

Congratulations to Dr. Joanna Lumbsden-Pinto on receiving the Outstanding PhD Scholar Award & completing her PhD SUNY ESF SUNY - The State University of New York on pine barrens ecology (stay tuned for the papers!). It was a pleasure to serve as Joanna’s advisor & to celebrate her many accomplishments this week!

Exciting day @ The Steere Herbarium New York Botanical Garden with interns from SUNY ESF SUNY - The State University of New York. The interns will spend the summer at the herbarium learning & assisting with the study of seed traits of neotropical dry forest trees 🌳 🌴 lead by Pablo López Bustamante from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Have you ever wondered what fire 🔥 & One Health have in common? If so read the new #BioScience American Institute of Biological Sciences review👇 led by Sam Gilvarg, a PhD student SUNY ESF SUNY - The State University of New York. I was happy to contribute to this multi-author effort integrating diverse perspectives. doi.org/10.1093/biosci…

Excited to share that I’ve been promoted to Professor (full) SUNY ESF SUNY - The State University of New York starting Sept 1! It’s been a winding path across countries & continents. Thanks to my fantastic mentors, colleagues, & students who walked with me along the way. I could not have done it without you. 🥂

Our lab has 3 presentations Ecological Society meeting in Baltimore. Check them out if you are interested in vegetation change over space or time under changing climate or disturbance regime. Lumbsden-Pinto: Tue, COS 046 (10:15am); Dovciak: Wed, COS 118 (3:45pm); Kiel: Wed, PS-29-046 (5pm)

Adding the 4th & very important presentation Ecological Society from our lab - lead by our former PhD student, amazing Jordon Tourville, now a research ecologist Appalachian Mtn Club. Come check out his talk on the non-climatic controls of climate-driven tree migrations: Thu, COS-168, 4:15pm

A lovely visit to Baltimore Ecological Society meeting last week. So many great talks! Also great to see many colleagues+meeting new ones. A splendid day in the woods at SmithsonianEnv w/great info about #NEON. Our lab had four presentations & we are now ready for a new semester SUNY ESF.

Done! A new experiment now set up on our mountain 🏔️ forest 🌳🌲site network in 4 Northeastern US states to test how seed rain, microsites, & herbivory interact to affect early stages of climate-induced tree migrations. Led by Dr. Nathan Kiel, Nathan Kiel, post-doc in our group.
