By request, we’re sharing more footage taken during the recent overflight of Kīlauea volcano’s summit eruption site on the Island of Hawai‘i. The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory conducted the monitoring overflight of Halema‘uma‘u crater yesterday morning, December 2, 2025.

Lahar flowed down the slopes of Mount Semeru in East Java, Indonesia, this afternoon. A fast-moving lahar from Mount Semeru - formed from volcanic debris mixed with water - swept down the volcano’s slopes, moving like a powerful volcanic mudflow.

This fleeting red flash above a thunderstorm cloud is one of Earth's most elusive electrical phenomena! They're called sprites! Fun fact: This image was captured by citizen scientist Nicolas Escurat through the citizen science project Spritacular. ✨

Haven Demo remains healthy as we continue to meet spacecraft test objectives. We’ve completed testing of redundant failover systems & an over-the-air software update, calibrated critical GNC instruments, and verified propulsion tank heating.

🌋Volcano monitoring at the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) is a family affair. Even in their homes, #HVO staff closely watch the 24/7 livestream cameras, along with multiple other data streams, including gas, tilt, and seismic sensors. Sometimes, they have the help of a

Kilauea Message 2025-12-05 20:50:57 HST. The north vent is a boiling cauldron of lava tonight and the south vent is spattering too. There have been 4 precursory overflows since just before 1 pm HST this afternoon and more overflows are expected before the fountain finale begins.

In case you ever wondered what it would be liked to be engulfed in a lava fountain... This video was recorded by the V3 camera, located on the south rim of Halema‘uma‘u crater at the summit of Kīlauea volcano on the Island of Hawai‘i. The camera, located in a hazardous closed

Kilauea Message 2025-12-06 12:28:34 HST. Just a note that if you are one of the dedicated observers that watch our instrument data, the "wiggles" in the tilt data were caused by the arrival of the teleseismic waves from the Magnitude 7 Hubbard Glacier earthquake in Alaska.

Here are some other views of Kīlauea summit eruption lava fountaining episode 38 in Halema‘uma‘u crater on the Island of Hawai‘i, and answers to some of your questions about this activity. This eruptive episode began from the north vent at about 8:45 am HST this morning,

Here we observe the ground motion (red: up, blue: down) across North America from the strong magnitude 7.0 Hubbard Glacier Earthquake yesterday (12/06/25) as detected by seismographs. Strong seismic waves first propagated across Alaska & Canada, and then across the entire globe!

Close up of the erupting core filament in Region 4299. These filaments are extremely dense, often containing intense magnetic fields. The eruption caused the filament to twist and fold back on itself as it broke loose. This is why the material seems to move towards us and then

Our colleagues at Earthquake Insights posted their early analysis of the Dec. 6 M7 Hubbard Glacier Earthquake. They note the complex transition from strike-slip to compressional faulting in the region, and discuss what the rupture (under the Hubbard Glacier) could look like.
