Three species severely threatened by overgrazing in the Mournes yesterday: Cowberry, Juniper, and Dwarf Willow. I have never seen any of these in fruit and all are mostly restricted to areas that sheep struggle to access.

If you are thinking of using sticky traps to deal with clothes moths (or other insects), PLEASE don't if there could be bats (eg in lofts). This little guy has had half of one ear torn off when it got stuck. Guess what he was trying to eat? That's right, the moths. Bat Conservation Trust #bats

New paper out! 🚨 We show that vampire bats use amino acids from a recent blood meal to fuel RUNNING - a rare mode of locomotion in bats ideal for stalking prey. I’d worry less about your neck and more about your ankles! 🧛🏻‍♂️ The Welch Lab Royal Society Publishing royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rs…

Badger season is in full swing out in south Galway! 🦡 We're utilising several methods to non-invasively collect hair samples from badgers out in the field, like this baited 🥜, sticky PVC pipe Hopefully they aren't all put off by this week's forecast! ❄️🌧️

I started Ireland's most ambitious camera trap project in Wicklow as part of Snapshot Europe. Since 2021, I partnered with Lab of Wildlife Ecology & Behaviour + ReWild Wicklow deploying 150 cameras, collecting ~400,000 photos, and ~31 years worth of survey effort. 2024's highlights below! 🧵👇
