Cannes requests: 1/ Enough with the dribbling over 70s NYC, please, filmmakers. We can all now agree 42nd St was scuzzy and shooting under el trains was cool. 2/ Having your fingers chopped off does indeed suggest Bad Times, but I’ve seen enough of this now for a while. Thanks.

Optimism tells me this disastrous debate could turn out to be better for all than a middling one - if it forces Biden to step aside and puts a more capable candidate opposite Trump.

It’s a real and terrifying, ‘who’s going to tell dad he can no longer drive his car’ moment for the USA. Enablers - Obama, Harris, Clintons - need to step aside.

Enjoyed the Closing at the Olympics, especially Zaho de Sagazan in the Tuileries, and Billie Eilish live from LA. But nothing could compete with the invention and power of the Opening. Turning an entire city into theatre in the way they did was pure magic.

I'm not there but wishing everyone at the rebounding Edinburgh film fest (Edinburgh International Film Festival) good luck on their opening night! First film festival I ever went to and many great memories of discovering films and filmmakers there. Break a leg Paul Ridd and co!

Buddha of Suburbia at the Barbican Centre is such a joy. Rompy, music-full spin on Hanif Kureishi‘s novel, pursuing the heart more than the head (although fruity enough to include lots of head too). Enormously playful and charming.

‘It crunches up and down through various gears, all of them intense and never abandoning a punkish sense of anarchy, while keeping a compassionate eye firmly on the woman at its core.’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ for Lynne Ramsay’s ‘Die My Love’ #Cannes2025 timeout.com/movies/die-my-…
