Labor productivity and TFP growth in manufacturing have seen a huge slowdown since 2010. What is going on? Danial Lashkari and I find this pattern is pervasive: even the fastest growing industries and largest firms have seen significant growth deceleration. More here:

All the automation, robotics, and outsourcing of low-tech tasks we hear about must raise labor productivity. But productivity has in fact stagnated in US manufacturing for over a decade. Jeremy Pearce & I find this pattern is pervasive, even among frontier firms and industries.

Our paper provides a method to estimate demand elasticities and infer quality change in settings beyond the CES preferences. Applying method to US imports, we show official measures of inflation in import prices are upward biased bc they don’t account for quality improvements.
