Auditor General for Wales Adrian Crompton spoke at the ICAEW Audit and Assurance 2024 conference this week. He encouraged delegates to ensure that they had the right data, to concentrate on the big picture and to focus on the longer-term implications of decisions.

Although expected costs to the public purse have been largely contained since my interim report in 2020, the overall story of the project to upgrade the A465 is one of significant cost increases and delays.

Finding efficiencies is unlikely to return the NHS to financial balance. More fundamental challenges need to be grasped around the shape and infrastructure of the NHS, the level of funding it needs, its workforce challenges and how demand for its services can be better managed.

If any other part of public service was in this system wide ‘hole’ the noise would be riotous. The demand and expectation for fundamental action would be irresistible - I don’t hear it.

Price inflation has hit the affordable housing programme hard. The Welsh Government faces difficult choices about its funding priorities and approach if it remains committed to meeting or getting close to its 20,000 social homes target by March 2026.

We estimate that the Welsh Government could need as much as £580 million to £740 million extra capital on top of existing budget assumptions to get close to meeting its target of building 20,000 new affordable homes by 2026.
