Vacancies for US Senate and US House are filled differently from each other according to the US Constitution and Florida law.

US Senate vacancies are filled at the next general election, but the Governor appoints an individual to fill the seat until that time. According to the 17th Amendment of the US Constitution: “When vacancies happen in the representation of any state in the Senate, the executive

US House vacancies are filled by special election only. Article I Section 2, cl. 4 of the US Constitution says, “When vacancies happen in the Representation [House] from any state, the executive authority thereof shall issue writs of election to fill such vacancies.” Section

Yesterday, I and my team Florida Department of State spoke with legislative leaders from Arizona including the Senate President and Speaker of the House about how Florida's election code allows for the timely and accurate counting of ballots. We are happy to share the Florida blueprint.

This Special Election is being conducted as quickly as statutorily possible. We are committed to ensuring this election is held as soon as we are allowed to hold it by state law. This special election will be faster than we have ever done before.

We are just now in receipt of Congressman Mike Walz's resignation letter, therefore the special election for CD 6 will proceed according to the following timeline.

On first review of the President’s EO it is right on point. It provides fixes for several of the issues we have raised before Congress. It also incorporates many of the election reforms Florida is already doing. This is BIG!! 💪🏻

Today in DC I joined SOS from MS, LA and OH to meet with the White House to discuss state level implementation of the President’s election integrity EO. The plan is simple, all states should adopt the Florida blueprint!

Another productive day in DC. The cooperation with the Administration on election integrity has been tremendous. Florida had to sue the last administration to get data that they were lawfully required to provide. This one is providing it to states fast and for free.
