Copenhagen's Kartoffelrækkerne, quite literally Potato Rows, are a group of 11 streets in the city centre's north. Built as worker's housing in the 1880s, they've since become famous as play streets, shared between people and cars. Less obvious in the winter but still delightful.

Good places look good in the rain.

Six storeys. Nobody minds. Observe how rustication, cornice lines, detail and two pilasters breaks up what could be a spreadsheet of windows into a friendly and humane face.

We are much richer than the society which created this social housing over a century ago and yet theses homes have more civic dignity, love & pride than we can muster. Ultimately, it’s not a question of economics but of desire & architectural fashion.

Brick by brick, the old-world way—no veneers, no shortcuts, just solid masonry doing what it does best. Built to stand the test of time (and Oklahoma weather), which is more than we can say for most things these days.

It’s beautiful. Who whines about beautiful buildings except architects?

It feels like when you have a neighborhood like the left in your immediate vicinity, building an area like the one one the right just next to it must be a symptom of severe brain worms, both by the developer and his designers and the city administration.
