A real pleasure to present at the “Crises of Liberalism?” workshop (Royal Holloway) on racial justice and political liberalism today! Many thanks to the ASPP, and organisers (Nat Rutherford) for a great conference, and giving me the opportunity to speak.
After a tricky couple of years, I’m absolutely delighted to be informed that I achieved a distinction in my MPhil! Now time for a rest before I start my DPhil at Nuffield College in September.
OWIPT founder Rufaida Al Hashmi (Nuffield College) has published her first paper! Rufaida examines whether the use of lotteries in immigration policy are justified for reasons of fairness diversity or a sound decision making process. Out in Applied Philosophy! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/ja…
Really happy to be giving comments at this for Dr Helen McCabe’s new book - swing by if you like Mill, socialism, or want to see a non-historian (me) talk about intellectual history.
At today's Owipt Nuffield College we discuss great papers from Rufaida Al Hashmi & Ruari Maguire on immigration and unrecognised states, presented by Shai Agmon, and Charlie Richards who writes on sexual practices in the liberal state, presented by @KushWestwood.
At today's Owipt Nuffield College we will discuss great papers by Johann Go on the expressive function of healthcare presented by Charlie Richards, and Emily Dyson on Women' s work presented by adrian kreutz. This is the final OWIPT of the term - and it has been a blast!
At tomorrow's Owipt Nuffield College we will discuss great papers: Geertje Bol's "Catharine Macaulay on Aristocracy: America,France, and Britain", presented by Robert Cheah and Charlie Richards "Making Social Rights Sensitive to Feasibility" presented by Dai Oba. Looking forward!
Sad to be leaving Durham University after presenting my paper “Social Rights and Refugees” at the Refugees and the Duty of Rescue conference. Thanks to all the participants for making it such a fun and stimulating few days - particular thanks to Dr Bradley H Smith for organising!
For our final OWIPT meeting of the year, we are discussing two great papers: "A Phenomenological Approach to Political Emotions" by @JK_Friedrich and "On the Ethics of Emergency Evacuations" by Charlie Richards. And - due to the lovely weather - a special outdoors session!
Great to have presented my paper on War and Social Rights at the Association for Social and Political Philosophy annual conference this week (Durham University). Thanks so much to all the participants for their wonderful papers, and to the organisers for putting it all together!
📢Next week: Former ISRF Fellow, Kimberley Brownlee and her colleagues, David Jenkins and Adam Neal introduce the new book ‘Being Social’, with responses from Laura Valentini, Adam Etinson and Charlie Richards | 2 Dec, 5pm (GMT). Info and registration👇isrf.org/events/book-la…
The conference that me and @temiogunye organised wrapped up today! Huge shoutout to the amazing speakers, attendees, and staff (Nuffield College) who made this event such a success.
My paper "The Expressive Function of Healthcare" is now published (Open Access) in the Journal of Ethics. I argue that a core reason to value healthcare is because of the way it expresses respect to individuals with salient health needs. link.springer.com/article/10.100… SpringerEthics
