HRGD (Historical Readings of Great Discoveries) journal club is a grassroot group interested in discussing the classical papers in molecular genetics, developmental biology, and neuroscience. We would also discuss significant recent literature in our first-author series.

A preview of HRGD journal club in 2024! By providing the space to appreciate great discoveries in the context of history, we hope to facilitate a younger and more diverse generation of trainees to take over the baton of scientific methods, collegiality, and leadership.

Our first session of HRGD journal club will be on Wednesday, Jan 10th. Please find sign up information in your Rockefeller email. The scientific topic of the session is “Genetic control of biochemical reactions”. We will have food from Up Thai.

George Beadle was a notable Morgan lab trainee who would later receive a Nobel prize and succeed Morgan as the chair of Caltech Biology. Following his two seminal papers, we will explore how the most ingenious scientists choose their experimental system and research direction.

Have you known a great mentor? What is the best thing that your teachers or mentors have ever done for you? We would like to hear your perspectives while uncovering Morgan’s role as a mentor who had transformed Beadle's research and career.

Our second session of HRGD journal club will be held on Thursday, Jan 25th. The scientific topic of the session is “DNA is the genetic material”. our icebreaking topic for discussion in this session would be "the unpopular idea in science"

Session 3 of HRGD journal club next week: the Double Helix!

HRGD Journal Club Session IV: the hen that changed biology. We will be joined by Harold Varmus, the senior author of one of our selected paper and co-recepient of 1989 Nobel Prize.

[HRGD session V] We will discuss the landmark paper by Nüsslein-Volhard and Wieschaus, along with another legendary paper from Pourquié's lab that unveiled the mechanism underlying somitic segmentation in vertebrates. We would also discuss what it takes to make great discoveries.

HRGD Session VI: we are doing to discuss the findings of microRNA and RNAi along with Gary Ruvkun, Professor at Harvard Medical School and MGH.

HRGD Journal Club Session VII: we are going to talk about the sense of touch and the ideas that have been touched.

Our 8th session of the Historical Reading of Great Discoveries (HRGD) journal club will be held on Thursday, April 18th from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in CRC 406. The scientific topic of the session is “The identity of stem cells”. We will be joined by Professor Elaine Fuchs for discussion.
