This morning I visited our fifth annual Portland Public Schools Summer Arts Academy. A big BRAVO to all our arts educators providing this inspiring program to so many students from across the district! I observed students engaged in dance, hip-hop, theatre, band, choir & visual arts classes.

I want to express a big appreciation to our Summer Acceleration Academy educators for providing such an engaging & positive learning experience to our young scholars. Thank you for supporting students with these valuable additional weeks of instruction & for making it so joyful!

We published our editorial calling for an end to the PPS teachers strike online on Friday. It's in print today, on The Oregonian's front page. We rarely publish front-page editorials, but the impact of this strike on students and the community merit it. Schools must be reopened.
