UK GDP grew by a robust 0.7% in Q1 2025, beating consensus estimates of 0.6%. This follows on from 0.1% in Q4 2024. The economy has grown 1.3% over the past year.

Growth in Q1 was primarily driven by increases in business investment and household spending, while both government spending and investment declined. A drag from lower inventories was largely offset by net trade.

UK CPI inflation rose to 3.5% in April (from 2.6% in March), broadly in line with Bank of England expectations. This marked the highest rate of inflation since January 2024. Core CPI inflation also picked up to 3.8%, from 3.4% last month

The uptick in inflation was driven primarily by higher energy costs due to the Ofgem price cap hike. A rise in air fares also contributed noticeably to the increase in headline inflation in April

The CBI’s latest quarterly Distributive Trades Survey found that retail sales fell in the year to May. Retailers expect sales to decline at a faster rate next month.
