I love how the writing of this paper on Gregory of Tours and Ambrose of Milan's use of emotion in religious space to promote certainty is reminding me just how much I bloody love writing about Gregory! Paper is for Society for the History of Emotions's upcoming conference on Unsettling Certainties.

Looking for recommendations! Apart from Gauthier and Picard's Topographie Chretienne, does any one know of a book/database that catalogues every church built in Gaul during the sixth century? I'm specifically trying to identify churches built between 536 and 544 CE.

Leeds IMC paper is timed and ready. I've also finished carving this inscription from the 5-6thC Basilica of St. Martin at Tours. I don't know whether to add a decorative cross, dove, olive branch, or just leave plain.

Listening to the fabulous speakers at the Society for the History of Emotions Emotions of the Future Conference, I can't help but be struck by just how much fear and hope there is. They've appeared in many different contexts and periods, but they are the primary emotions. It says a lot.

Friends and colleagues who study late antiquity, besides Peter Brown and Danuta Shanzer is there anyone else that has written on the use of scents and smells in the churches of Gaul and Italy 400-600?

Happy Birthday to Bishop Gregory of Tours who was born on this day in 538. 🎉 Not many can say their work is still making an impact 1,486 years later.
