How accessible is residential treatment for adolescents with opioid abuse disorders? Caroline Raymond-King, MD PhD of OHSU News + coauthors find high costs, long waits, and uneven access. Nearly 40% had no bed available, and the mean upfront cost was over $28,000. hubs.la/Q02hjDvv0

Only 1 in 17 pediatricians is ready to treat opioid addiction in teens ...This despite drug overdoses now killing a high school classroom of teens each week across the US, and becoming the 3rd leading cause of death in kids <19 Brief 🧵 1/4 npr.org/sections/healt…

Pts who overdose on fentanyl have a higher one year mortality than patients who have a STEMI post PCI. The NNT for buprenorphine is 2. There is no other medication that we prescribe in the ED with a greater impact on mortality. -@callan_fockele on the NAEMSP Townhall.

📢Just out in JAMA Internal Medicine - the most rigorous study of interprofessional addiction consult services (ACS) to date. HUGE props to Dr McNeely & team for conducting this study and NYC Health + Hospitals for investing in this work.

Correct. I guess it's fine to get fancy with the care and tech, but that's not low-hanging fruit. If we are really serious about mitigating on trauma-related morbidity and mortality, the answers are in smaller (lighter) vehicles and safer streets.

For decades, we've known that a vast majority of ppl who end up needing addiction treatment started use before their 18th birthdays. Despite this, gov'ts and the medical system have failed to include youth in the most significant policies affecting their access to care.

Our work was cited in The Seattle Times in a tremendous piece sharing the devastating impact of the fentanyl crisis on teens. Every week, a classroom of teens dies from drug overdose across the US. My thoughts on what's needed to address this crisis: seattletimes.com/seattle-news/m…
