The other day I attended a birth with a first year resident. No one counted to 10 or yelled “PUSH!” We sat with our hands in our laps and waited for the baby to emerge. She didn’t tear. I wonder what birth would be like if more doctors got low-risk birth training from midwives.

The first trimester is such a strange time…you feel terrible, you’re nausea, extremely exhausted but aren’t showing yet. And you can’t really tell many people what’s wrong so you’re making up reasons why you aren’t acting yourself in hopes no one guesses…

Having a cervical exam at your 36 week appointment is not only optional, in most cases it's pointless.

If you prefer to avoid having a cervical exam at your prenatal appointment, have a discussion with your provider while wearing your clothes. You have more power when you aren't in a paper sheet.

My heartbreaks to think about how forced birth is going to contribute to these numbers. Parenthood (particularly without support) is so hard and truly takes a toll. I wish that postpartum planning was equally thought about as often as creating a birth plan or having a doula.
