I am quite happy with our new caps, but I expect Jane to be out of conceit with hers already.

I read mother the chief of Jane's letter; she was interested and pleased, as she ought, and will be happy to hear from her herself, I know.

I caught a small cold several days ago. This has worn off, however, and I have scarcely felt anything for the last two days. Fall is coming!

Mother is not quite well. Her stomach is rather deranged. I must keep her in rhubarb - and give her plenty of water... and port!

We are now all of us sitting round the table in the inner room writing letters, Edward is having a comfortable cose in the room adjoining.

I do improve in sleeping -- I most quickly fall off; I have been awake ever since five and sooner!

There is to be only one more ball of the year -- next Monday is the day. It shall be most fantastic!

I have a new gown! The jacket is all in one with the body, and comes as far as the pocket-holes -- about half a quarter of a yard deep.

My father and Frank, deferring their visit to Kippington on account of Mr. M. Austen's absence, are to be at Godmersham to-day.
