Just published; #straightforward. A new wayfinding book that includes Atelier’s work for the Type Archive and Lambeth Council. An example of creating a sense of place using the typeface Albertus, designed by Berthold Wolpe who lived in the borough. #wayfinding #placemaking #dnco

For Evelina London Children's Hospital; a colourful, fun installation helping to make the environment reassuring for sick children. 130 (and still growing) ‘thumbprints’ applied to the central atrium, acknowledging donor names. #supergraphics #environmentalgraphics #placemaking

Sad to hear of the passing of the designer Derek Birdsall. From our archives; this book was designed by him in 1986. Derek didn’t want to use a drawing board to prepare the jacket artwork, so Ian helped out. Memories and admiration brought to mind. #GraphicDesign

The Royal Society for Arts, Manufactures and Commerce are commemorating their 270th anniversary. Twenty years ago Atelier created this celebratory mark for the #RSA’s 250th. It took a little while to spot the nested acronym. A graphic solution, hidden in the problem. #typography

Just installed – another cast iron plaque, marking the course of the hidden River Fleet under north London. Suitably inconspicuous in dappled light, it is like the river, there to be discovered. #typography #type #environmentalgraphics #placemaking #castironsigns #manhole

A shepherd dreamt of making cheese, so he built a dairy on the side of his house and started. He’ll sell his very first batch at this weekend’s #slaley Agri. Show. Atelier drew portraits of his favourite sheep and created a flock of cheese labels. #drawing #artwork #graphicdesign

Just checked the #prydairy cheese labels being produced. Mesmerising. Short on time but printed well by #labelexpress. The new Northumberland sheep’s cheese called #slaley will be available at Slaley Agricultural Show this weekend – where the labels won’t be moving quite as fast.

A visit to our wonderful printers #dayfold, marking 20 years of working together on the #royalgeographicalsociety Bulletin. Reliably produced for thousands of Society members three times a year. Sixty issues, not one deadline missed. Worth celebrating with a little bubbly.

Labels for #pryhousenorthumberland. Steve the shepherd’s first batch of #slaley sheeps’ cheese was delivered to a local shop and sold out fast. Corralled together in a box, the batch looks like a flock of cheeses. #drawing #artwork #graphicdesign #packagingdesign

A new crest for one of the country’s oldest tennis clubs. Surrounded and hidden by trees, the crest captures the club’s bucolic setting. It is being sensitively applied, aiming to appear as if it has always been this way, since 1882. #graphicdesign #typography #placemaking

One of our donor plaques being installed for Evelina London Children’s Hospital. Designed to appear significant but not extravagant, the plaques also play a small part in making the hospital a warm and fun place for young children. #environmentalgraphics #placemaking #publicrealm

Life is good – especially when the reward for our design work is a freshly made cheese with a smiling sheep on it. Thanks to @pryhousenorthumberland #labeldesign #graphicdesign #packagingdesign

Received last week – a surprise gift from photographer Markéta Luskačová. Some 1996 archive prints of Ian developing a series of educational broadsheets. An example of research-based design; finding out what teachers need and how to engage children with beautiful illustrations.

New kit, with a new club crest. Embroidered and printed versions, with different levels of detail. Contrary to contemporary thinking that a logo should be ruthlessly consistent, this crest has been crafted to read when applied to a range of fabrics. #graphicdesign #visualidentity

Back to college, back to the drawing board. It has been 40+ years (before computers) since we drew letters. Revisiting a long-forgotten pleasure, thanks to a wonderful City & Guilds summer school course in letter carving. #Typography #type

Environmental graphics for the City of London; redrawing and testing royal arms to assess legibility when reproduced in steel and ceramic. These arms will identify the resting place of four medieval queens. #publicrealm #placemaking #informationdesign #environmentalgraphics

Couldn't be further from a keyboard. Learning about the craft of stone letter carving, in preparation for our next Atelier project. Loved the process of drawing our own letters, then chiselling them and discovering how light governs legibility. A first attempt. #Typography #type

Work in progress; a scale presentation, a site test and some type tests in stone. This environmental graphics project replicates tombstones in a medieval church nave. Due to be completed in 2026. #publicrealm #placemaking #informationdesign #environmentalgraphics #Typography
