🚨 Landlords are CELEBRATING our failure to build housing 🚨 Building more homes lowers rents. That’s why landlords want to stop new homes at all costs. Blocking homes is a giveaway to landlords at the expense of working New Yorkers who suffer rising rents every year.

Denver created an e-bike incentive program and countless residents applied immediately, then Colorado created a program and saw the same response. It’s time for San Francisco to create an e-bike incentive program. Please help make that happen at eBikeSF.org now!

This is why saying "I want more homes of all sizes on my block" to your local council person is so important. They need to hear us and not the local cadre of angry NIMBYs. And if we believe the Gottman 5:1 "Magic Ratio" we'll need our council person to hear this 5x more.

Road deaths have been the leading cause of child death—by far—for decades. They were surpassed in 2020 by guns, not because US roads got safer, but because gun deaths got worse by more. The US is also an outlier in pedestrian deaths. US roads are a serious public health hazard.

The Chron's John King is so close to understanding that local planning departments design facades, not architects, through objective design standards that obsess over massing breaks, alternating materials and other facade articulation requirements. sfchronicle.com/bayarea/articl…

Community gardens are a bit like horses in the city. A lovely, harmless, potentially educational and very expensive diversion. At the point someone starts insisting places (sunlight or water) for vegetables are more important than places for people, they’ve lost the plot.

The trouble with this theory is that it can't explain variation in affordability. Does Minneapolis have greedier investors than Midwestern peer cities? No, they cut "red tape" and flooded the market with affordable new housing, to the benefit of renters.

what if we built walkable, mixed-use neighborhoods with community centers that held social club meetings and each club had stylish club jackets? 📽️ tiktok merstew007

One of the most insidious aspects of our housing discussions is the erasure of renters, the complete denial that renters benefit from housing. The classist notion that owner-occupied housing is all that counts.

Today, I updated the BC Building Code to allow for Single Egress Stair (SES) designs in low- and mid-rise buildings.   By allowing SES, we will boost our housing supply and create more options for families who need larger layouts and designs. 👉🏾 news.gov.bc.ca/31592 🧵[1/4]

To be clear: the means to make roads safe are low cost, low tech, available, proven and effective. Saying you need to “study” barriers to protect people on foot or bikes is effectively trying to find a way to continue to give a placebo when an effective treatment exists.

New Yorkers (City) walk to work, the train and activities. The human tolerance for blunt force trauma is fixed, but the force they’re hit with keeps going up. Governor Kathy Hochul is prioritizing driving these vehicles into the middle of Manhattan free while the train is $15 each way.

93% of those who used the e-bike rebate had never tried it before; 60% were new to cycling. One year in, those who got the rebate have consistently reduced car travel by 30-40%. The rebates make people healthier, our air cleaner, and our streets safer! dailyhive.com/vancouver/free…
