#ASM18 Panel discussion on the role of Women in Artisanal and Small-scale Mining and Quarrying. #Women make up a large proportion of the informal artisanal and small-scale mining workforce, even the majority for many commodities.

H.E. Edgar Chagwa Lungu President of the Republic of #Zambia opened the ASM18 . Delivering his opening remarks, the president reaffirmed his governments commitment to supporting artisanal and small-scale miners in Zambia.

Conference Chair Daniel Franks this morning welcomed over 500 delegates to the conference. The #ASM18 is the Largest ASM18 in the last 10 years! The outcome declaration will chart the #vision of Artisanal and Small-scale Mining and Quarrying going forward.

#ASM18 comes at a very critical moment in Zambia’s mining sector. The 7th National Development Plan 2017-2021 has prioritised the promotion of ASM, & in particular #DevMin as one of the strategies for job creation and economic diversification - Richard Musukwa , Minister of Mines

The ASM18 will foster a global dialogue about the development opportunities and #challenges of #ASM and is a space for the #voices of artisanal and small-scale mining and quarrying to share their visions of the future and design programmes to implement their #vision.

#ASM Handbook Launched - the book was launched at the #ASM18 conference & is aimed at helping improve the #performance of the Artisanal & Small-scale Mining sector in Zambia. The book was launched by Zambia's Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Mines & Minerals Dev- Paul Chanda.

ASM18 closes in Livingstone. The Conference was closed by Zambia's Minister of Mines & Minerals Development Hon. Richard Musukwa, who assured delegates that he will do every thing possible to ease the process of acquiring Artisnal & Small-scale mining licences.
