I'm genuinely curious if other genres have some genre specific convention that gets debated again and again within the community as much as the HEA gets debated in romance. I'd love to hear about it, if there is. 😅

EXACTLY. LET VILLAINS BE VILLAINS IN FICTION.

Romance has two rules. The story must revolve around a romantic relationship and the couple (or more) must be happily together at the end. This is the promise you make to a reader when you market a book as a romance.

BTW every genre has these rules. A mystery must have a mystery. A comedy must be funny. Sci fi needs to sci and fi. People are terrified of the vulnerability of love so the HEA stresses them out. That's my hill on which I will die.

Honestly I think writing about love and comedy are two of the hardest things to do. Healthy love is hard to model and so many people a tragically unfunny. Both take so much skill and are wildly unappreciated.

It’s about the journey, not the destination. I want my readers to wonder how the hell I’m going to make the HEA happen, and continue to read because they want to see it play out.
