Edmund Edlmann MC joined the Artists Rifles in 1915 and commissioned into the Lincolns. He was one of our spies. His cousin Herbert served with us in the Boer War and commanded the 1st Bn in France. Another cousin, Francis Edlmann DSO, joined us in 1914.

John Nash’s painting Over the Top, commemorates the 1st Artists' Rifles attack OTD 1917, near Marcoing. Of the 80 men, 68 became casualties within minutes. Nash was one of the 12 spared. The work is in the IWM. He presented another version to the Artists Rifles.

Barnes Wallis served in the Artists Rifles during WWI. As a Corporal he was employed to design the sewage system for their camp at Hare Hall.

In the 1860s the Artists Rifles contained a number of men with socially progressive views. Amongst the best known were John Ruskin, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Morris, Lowes Cato Dickinson and Henry Solly.

The latest donation to the museum - a tankard awarded to Pte J.W. Marshall for bayonet fighting in 1896. Born 1875. Joined 1892. C/Sgt 1901. Lt 1914. Capt 1916. CSM 1921. Jack was a regimental character and an expert with the bayonet as a young man.

Good news. All Of London’s Remaining Green Cab Shelters Now Have Listed Status. London's famous cabmen's shelters were designed by a member of the Artists Rifles. The architect Maximilian Clarke (No.967) served in the regiment for 29 years. secretldn.com/london-green-c…

Very good to see this. Jones was also a founding member of the Artists Rifles. Signing up as No. 95 on 10th May 1860, with such men as Frederick Leighton, George Frederic Watts, John Everett Millais, Edward Burne Jones & William Morris.

Jock Easton DSO MC served with the Regiment during WWII and then rejoined when we were reformed after the war. He volunteered for Korea/Malaya a few years later.
