It's a fact of life that FND symptoms commonly relapse. Not in everyone, but in many people they do come back - often when least expected. FND symptoms can crop up again like weeds - but are less likely if you tend to yourself carefully and make plans 2/

So, here are some tips for planning for, and managing relapses - with contributions from other FND colleagues and people with FND. 3/

1⃣ - Expect and plan for a relapse. Everyone wants to forget about FND when they are feeling better. Instead just have a think about what you might do/ how you might react if symptoms return. Consider making a relapse plan- record a video, or write a letter to yourself 4/

2⃣ - Plan for getting different symptoms... that you haven't had before, like a speech or memory problem. Discuss new symptoms with a doctor but often (and horribly) it will be your brain playing 'FND Bingo'. 👏👏 "Functionally Jess" for the image bit.ly/49FCboC 5/

3⃣ - Get in early People with FND are often good at 'blocking' evidence that their health is getting worse. Listen to friends and family and get in early with any intervention. 6/

4⃣ - What triggers your relapses? Over time people with FND can learn to recognise triggers like stress, illness or overactivity that can trigger relapses. 7/

5⃣ - What protects you from relapses? Take some action. Talk to someone trusted. Give yourself a break! Say no to someone asking you for something What works for you? 8/

6⃣ - Responding to unpredictable relapses Sometimes there is no warning. You just wake up and there is the relapse. But you CAN do something about how you respond to symptoms in that scenario. "It was expected". "It's just bad luck". "I'm not going to get angry/panic". 9/

7⃣ - What's helped before after a relapse starts? How did you get better before? Did you make a relapse plan you can look at? Would looking at it help? 10/

Jon Stone (@jonstoneneuro) 's Twitter Profile Photo

8⃣ - Dont be angry with yourself People with FND are often unusually susceptible to self-criticism. Resist the temptation to blame yourself for relapses. 11/

Jon Stone (@jonstoneneuro) 's Twitter Profile Photo

9⃣ - Do you need to call an ambulance.. or not? It can be scary having an FND relapse. You may have to call emergency services. But for a relapse you are familiar with - then staying at home might help shorten it -and avoid unpleasant hospital interactions. 12/

🔟 - Plan for a series of relapses which get easier to manage Many people with FND experience a rollercoaster series of relapses which become less severe and more manageable over time. You may feel back to square one - but it doesn't mean you are 13/
