Just one bookmaker — Betfair. Right until the very end, this happy avaricious few seized every possible opportunity to make money out of being at the centre of power.

I'm at #TheCityUK annual conference. The first panel is talking about 'sustainable growth'. Mark my words, when Labour wins we will see a major financialisation of UK society and economy. The value extracted from critical social assets and infrastructure is going to be huge.

BORROWING: Reeves suggested she would not change govt borrowing rules. But remaining wedded to arbitrary fiscal rules will hold our economy back. They aren't an accurate measure of how much a govt can responsibly borrow + the chancellor could replace them with the wave of a pen.

At the Test Match at Trent Bridge yesterday, and I experienced a Frank Skinner Idiotic Eureka Moment when it finally dawned on me why Joe Root had chosen the squad number 66 for the back of his cricket shirt 🤦‍♂️

That’s all very well, but perhaps a focus on the order number would improve accuracy in after-sales: we have had 2 unsuccessful deliveries of replacement seat interiors, the first being too big, the second too small. I’d prefer less personalisation and greater efficiency tbh.

Incidentally, this is the key to what has just happened with 2 child cap - Treasury control. The vote came down to a demand that HMT regain and reinforce its autonomy over fiscal policy, its authority in government and therefore its authority over Labour… 1/n

98% of the adult cares homes closed to protect people from harm were run by for profit companies. And 90% of children's homes. Time to end this absurdity. Core public services should not be cash cows for private equity.

Ofgs. Another rowback. And how cringe is this: 'Heathrow are having to expand their VIP section in the middle of October to accommodate the number of high net worth people coming... [to the 'investment summit].'

Non-doms, senior public servants & private schools doing great job of persuading the Treasury why mooted tax rises on them wouldn’t work Doubt families affected by 2-child limit & frozen housing allowance have same chance to protest unworkability of their endless impoverishment

The most hilarious result in the Tory leadership contest today would be if Cleverly went out, Jenrick and Badenoch through to the final two. I don't see how it's possible, but with this Tory party, I wouldn't totally dismiss the idea.

I’ve co-authored a new report with Andy Pike for the Bennett Institute for Public Policy, @CURDSNewcastle and Insights North East on the ‘geography of financial distress’ in England’s authorities. Our analysis shows that authorities forecast a £9.3 billion shortfall by 2026-27: ft.com/content/25a6d3…
