I think its silly to make comparisons and broad strokes statements like this when theres so much amazing VGM coming out… but one thing i feel MKW has going for it is not just an amazing soundtrack—it’s also that it’s a beautiful love letter to 30+ years of jazz fusion history.

there’s a lot of meaningful context missing when you just experience it as game music; nintendo brought on board an all star team of veteran jazz musicians and arrangers who have played the jazz circuits across Japan, as part of widely successful groups like T-SQUARE and DEZOLVE-

the arrangements are so technically marvelous and eclectic in their styles and performances, and they all pay loving tribute to cats like metheny, chick, herby, etc. In my opinion, no other soundtrack this year embodies this much love for real world music history like this one.
