Important work from Dr Victoria Fleming and UCL Neurotherapeutics team. Key points: 1. App delivered spoken word therapy for aphasic patients works 2. Large effect sizes on trained items 3. Therapy leads to structural changes in patients' auditory cortices 4. App released later this year #UCLIoN

iReadMore therapy app is out now. It is designed for patients with acquired alexia (reading problems) caused by focal brain injury (e.g. stroke) or dementia. Mass-practice with trial-by-trial feedback. Evidence-based and peer-reviewed.

For those of you wanting a more digestible account of the evidence-base behind our newly-released reading therapy app iReadMore, for people with reading problems caused by stroke or dementia. See the video I made with @ZWoodhead about our 2018 Brain paper: youtube.com/watch?v=i8BliA…

Excited to see this important work published! I am very grateful to the team for letting me be part of such a great project, and Alexander Leff for kindly acknowledging me as joint lead author. Hoping the growing evidence will ensure the service becomes available on the NHS 🧠

Not surprising perhaps, but more high-level meta-analysis-based evidence (from 959 people with aphasia) that we need to provide much higher doses of speech and language therapy if we want to make the lives of people with aphasia better. #RELEASE #asphasia tinyurl.com/bdenkk24

One way to provide higher doses is to set up Intensive Comprehensive Aphasia Programmes. Jenny Crinion is presenting our work on this from the ICAP set up at UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology and NHNN Therapy & Rehabilitation at UK Stroke Forum now #UKSF21 #UKSFaphasia

If we want people with #aphasia to use our therapy apps, then we'd better make sure they are involved in designing them. Great co-design work from Tom Langford the UCL Neurotherapeutics team and software developer Pedro Quijada Leyton. Kudos to Zoe Woodhead and Dr Sheila Kerry who laid the groundwork.

The iTalkBetter clinical trial is out: tinyurl.com/5up6cc7m It's a self-supporting naming app that helps people with aphasia make large gains in their ability to retrieve trained words. Connected speech also improved and iTalkBetter use caused changes in brain volume #aphasia
