Stephen Boyd’s hands-on style made me better at writing, better at math, better at formulating interesting research questions, and helped me develop taste. Unlike many professors, he contributed substantially to our papers. I feel incredibly lucky to have worked with him.

An important thing here, obviously not specific to Stephen, is taste and problem formulation. What’s even worth bothering with? This is a thing you actually have to learn or have some feel for. You don’t learn in a class, only from experience.

Great blog post. All ML folks working in the bio space should seriously read this. This issue is seriously plaguing the field. Lots of bombastic AI4bio papers getting tons of attention (pun intended) that end up being entirely hollow under the surface. This is BAD for the field.

When u get into a new area, u almost surely end up not having the domain expertise. Designing tasks that actually matter, designing benchmark datasets, selecting strong baselines & showcasing discovery r not trivial challenges.
