There’s a colloquial German word, verschlimmbessern, that describes attempting to improve something but only making it worse (for example, most Microsoft Word updates). So go ahead and add to your German vocabulary the term etwas verschlimmbessern, or “to worsebetter something”

My favourite phrase for describing adolescence / the teenage years is the Spanish estar en la edad del pavo. It means “being in the age of the turkey”

A Danish expression for when it’s very windy is “it’s blowing like half a pelican.” An Estonian version is “wind so strong it could blow a pig on to its hind legs.” But my favourite is one I heard in German that translates to “it’s only wind when the sheep no longer have curls”
