Hot off the press!! jamanetwork.com/journals/jaman… My work with Abhi Pratap analyzing ~10,000 children's #wearables data from the #ABCD Study shows that sociodemographic factors and social determinants of health may affect their willingness to engage in wearables research. A🧵: 1/n

A significantly lower proportion of racial and ethnic minority youth, especially Black children, enrolled and were retained compared to their White counterparts throughout the 21-day period - household income💲and parental education🎓also affected retention. 2/n

We also saw that Black children's total wear-time was statistically significantly lower than their White counterparts - corroborating our observations for retention. Interestingly, we also saw how ABCD Study site locations and COVID-19😷impacted wear-time across the cohort. 3/n

These findings altogether show that while there was large-scale data collection across a nationally representative cohort of children, there was an inequity in the amount of data collected across racial-ethnic minorities and those of lower socioeconomic status. 4/n

While recruiting a diverse, nationally representative population is an amazing first step, we need to continue to strive to get #equitable data collection. Without that equity, we risk perpetuating pre-existing biases and creating further inequities. 6/n

Thanks to everyone involved in getting this paper out: Jessica Jenness, @abryantmiller, Ramzi Halabi, Ph.D., Massimiliano (Max) de Zambotti, Kara Bagot, Fiona C Baker and Abhi Pratap - wouldn't have been possible without all of your combined expertise. 6/n

Kudos, Ethan Kim, for leading the way in generating evidence highlighting the need to address #representative adoption and day-to-day usage of #wearables in #health #research #healthequity

In this cohort study, large-scale wearable device data collected from children showed considerable differences between White and Black children in terms of enrollment and daily wear time. ja.ma/3M3QI4B
