Average rents in England have risen by almost £100 a month since the last gov't raised Local Housing Allowance (part of benefits that goes to renting). Last Autumn, the new gov't froze these benefits - a one-way street to more debt, poverty and homelessness. #SpringStatement

Great the government are boosting housing supply - but the OBR say: "We expect the 0.5 per cent increase in the housing stock as a result of the planning reforms will reduce the average house price by around 0.8 per cent in 2029." Not exactly a gamechanger for aspiring FTBs..

More homes welcome but a few thousand off your first mortgage has to be seen in light of annual UK rents jumping up by more than £3,000 in the last three years. Add that to your planned spend every single year, and you see the problem with the gov't failing to limit rent rises.

More private renters are now in poverty than social renters. 4.8 million private renters are in poverty, up almost 300,000 on the previous year. Of these, almost 2 million are only in poverty when we factor in housing costs – around 40% of those in poverty.

This was a great discussion - I somehow twice caused the audio recording to experience a ‘catastrophic error’ so grateful to the PoliticsHome producers for fixing it all up!!

When landlords break the law, renters usually rely on the council to step in. But for some offences, tenants can claim back rent themselves. New Generation Rent research finds that tenants win cases against landlords just as much as councils. But new reforms fail to build on this.🧵

'Developers have said they will not build more if there is no demand at current prices.' This shows the government will never hit their 1.5million target without investing in social housing. Doing so would get social homes built that families can actually afford.

The idea of a 'housing bank' is interesting. But the real story here is that £25 billion for social housing over 10 years would be a real-terms cut if you factor inflation in? Under the Tories' Affordable Homes Programme (AHP) was £2.3bn a year? ft.com/content/5a833f…

What the £39bn Affordable Homes Programme announcement looks like on an annual basis. First, compared to the last AHP in nominal terms:
