We were crawling (in a flail tank A squadron Westminster Dragoons) past Hermanville when tanks behind us began to blow up. 3 flails were knocked out from anti tank fire from our right. A great mass of 4 engined bombers& gliders came in

on our right to reinforce the original Airborne drop on the River Orme. Quite a number were shot down. Next came a report that 40 Tiger tanks were heading our way. I learnt later that these were stopped by an anti tank screen the British had posted.

At last it began to grow dark. We filled up with petrol & ammunition and made a cup of tea. I was on guard &heard 3 German planes up alone & so much flak was sent up from our bridgehead that all were shot down. We were up at first light, about 4am. D-Day was over & D+1 had begun.

We had bread for the first time a month later. I slept in a bed again on Xmas Eve on 48 hrs leave. All the infantry who landed with us were killed or injured within a few months. I was really glad not to be in the infantry’

"I worked for Blair's Delivery Unit – trust me that the next government needs a new approach to reform" New article by Jonathan Slater explaining why the next government needs to look beyond top-down targets to successfully reform our public services✍️ civilserviceworld.com/professions/ar…

Jonathan Slater (@_jonathanslater) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Working in Tony Blair’s delivery unit was an honour 20 years ago, but today’s challenges demand new answers. Let’s liberate public servants, unleashing their creativity and compassion to serve citizens in ways which top down rule-makers can only dream of.
