So anyone know why my sftp server can only be transferred to and from externally when the client uses a VPN?

I have been sitting in the same call for hours waiting for somebody, and it's a VC I have to be moved into so I can't just join on my phone, and I'm too scared to leave because what if they come back when I leave for like 5 minutes and then I wouldn't know
