BREAKING NEWS The 2024 #NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for the discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation.

Another scientist whose work initially didn't get the recognition that it deserved - Victor Ambros was denied tenure at Harvard, even after publishing the seminal work that resulted in him receiving the Nobel Prize today!

Most of us learned in school about the Central Dogma: DNA->RNA->Proteins. For decades gene regulation was only about protein transcription factors regulating gene expression. Ambros and Rukun used the small nematode worm C. elegans to change that picture 1/2

Unbelievably well deserved!!!! The question of how protein sequence defines protein structure was fundamental. David's insights transformed the field and allowed the Deepmind group to develop powerful computational approaches that cracked the problem 1/3

The clinical applications are mind-blowing--they have designed proteins that can bind and block viral entry or bind and inactivate an oncogene--my jaw has dropped open reading these papers and more is to come. Kudos to all involved in these monumental advances! 9/n
