Mapping the brain of the fruit fly, smaller than the head of a pin, with 140,000 neurons, 50 million synapses. that took 5 years. It wouldn't have been accomplished without citizen scientists and volunteers! nature nature.com/articles/d4158…

The humble fruit fly has a surprisingly complex brain. After a decade of work, all 139,255 neurons have been mapped. 🪰✅ The ~300 person international team was led by @princeton and incl. #ElectronMicroscopy experts from Allen Institute. 🔗 princeton.edu/news/2024/10/0… #studyBRAIN

The 2024 #NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine focuses on the discovery of a vital regulatory mechanism used in cells to control gene activity. Genetic information flows from DNA to messenger RNA (mRNA), via a process called transcription, and then on to the cellular machinery

Brain-wide neuron tracing reveals that the mysterious mouse claustrum is highly connected to the rest of the brain. In this extreme example, several neurons wrap their axons entirely around the cortex, forming a crown-like structure. 👑 More: alleninstitute.org/news/scishots-… #SciShots

Had an incredible time attending the 'Gene Regulatory Networks for Development' advanced research training course at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) at Woods Hole, MA. Learned a lot about gene regulatory networks in multiple model organisms.

Our take on the Christmas tree! 🎄🧠 In this video by our #ElectronMicroscopy team, a fluffy pyramidal neuron is lit by twinkling input synapses. To make it, a brain sample was cut into 1000s of nm-thin sections and millions of high-res images were taken.

Welcome to embryo alphabet. Each day I will post an unannotated embryo image. We begin with the letter A, the next day will be B, etc. Repost this tweet w/an image of a different species embryo & add a quote with name that begins with same letter of the day. Enjoy!
