On Friday, 23 June, #Mozambique celebrated the end of its #disarmament , demobilisation & reintegration effort as #Renamo officially handed over its last weapons and closed the last of 16 military bases it maintained in the country.

1️⃣ Despite the Maputo Accord for Peace and National Reconciliation, #Frelimo remains reluctant to share political and economic access with Renamo or others beyond the ruling party. Winner-takes-all politics prevails, as do allegations of rigging levelled at Frelimo.

2️⃣ Several countries that are contributors to the Peace Process Basket Fund warn that 'It's now time to turn greater attention to the drivers of sustainable peace, including reconciliation and decentralization, and advancing long-term socio-economic reintegration'.

3️⃣ This means the drivers of the conflict between the Frelimo government and Renamo need to be addressed, including the inequities in sharing the country's wealth, the capture of state institutions by Frelimo, and allegations of recurrent electoral fraud.

4️⃣ Voter registration for the October 2023 #LocalElections confirms Frelimo's manipulative tendencies, with multiple reports from independent observers that the electoral bodies rigged registration to benefit Frelimo.
